EnjoyOur guide to eating out: Pubs Whilst there may not be quite the breadth of choice that a major city has to offer at any time of day or night (Vietnamese at 4am? No problem!), there are some wonderful choices for eating out when you come to stay at Blue Door Barns which is close to Lewes and Brighton, along with an array of picturesque local villages. Whilst this list is not exhaustive, we thought sharing a few of our favourites would be a great place to start covering a broad range of eateries to appeal to different tastes and budgets The Ram Inn This stylish country pub is the closest to Blue Door Barns, lying slap bang in the middle of the beautiful village of Firle, nestled at the foot of the South Downs so a great pit stop for many walks. It is more restaurant pub than local pub these days with a menu and wine list to match this status but does also serve some great beer including award-winning Burning Sky which is brewed at the micro-brewery in the village. A firm favourite for Sunday lunch with two sittings at 12 and 2, be sure to book. Visit The Ram Inn The Jolly Sportsman Tucked away in the sleepy village of East Chiltington and around a 15 min drive from Blue Door Barns, this excellent pub serves an ever-changing, seasonal menu of excellent food which combines classical techniques with a modern twist including cooking over open fire. This pub has a stylish interior with a cosy pub area, dining area and fabulous garden. Visit The Jolly Sportsman The Griffin 20 mins from our doors, The Griffin has long been an gastro institution in the area offering both a more formal restaurant or cosy pub setting dependent on your mood. It also has a showstopper of a garden with beautiful views and a summer BBQ menu for some alfresco dining. Visit The Griffin Inn The Sussex Ox This stalwart of a country pub has been a popular destination for decades. Indeed Bryony from Blue Door Barns remembers playing in its fabulous garden as a child, and is now approaching her 50th birthday! It offers well executed pub classics in a lovely setting with views across the Downs. In the Summer, it’s a great spot for a drink on the terrace as the sun sets.
